Greetings and all that good stuff. I uploaded a video overview of the Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister18 head.
I will be sending up a playthrough and possibly some other “bonus” material in the near future so stay tuned!! Rock on!!! Peter
How funny!! A title with two of the same word. LOL!! Anyways, he folks. YES. I have been quiet lately.. at least on the posting front. The new year brought in lots to do. Cleaning up the prior years stuff.. and preparing the way for the NEW YEAR and the prospects it holds. I have been busy behind the scenes.. and making some great progress.. but not “in studio” specifically.. here’s a quick breakdown of what I have been upto:
I still haven’t set up the video camera for recording, but have a new backdrop light that I am anxious to test. Hopefully my chromakey problems will be in the past now. I had hoped to shoot a quick video this week, but I’ve been a bit under the weather, and I’m not looking terribly “camera friendly” at the moment… perhaps “Halloweenish” is more like it. =)
Thanks all. I’ll keep you posted as best I can, but for upto to the minute updates follow me on Twitter @ PeterJCruz. I’m always tweeting on there. Check the Twitter bar to the right and see what I mean.. =)
Hello folks. I am planning to get a video up tomorrow with a demo of the Orange Dark Terror. But otherwise, I’ve been busy with holiday stuff and family… And as far as studio stuff is concerned I’ve been busy too.
A planned upgrade to Windows 8 had me consider my hardware and software situation in the studio. My current audio interface was not going to make the switch, so I had to begin looking at New interfaces.
I debated between USB2.0 and FireWire and for years had always heard that FireWire was far superior. But times have changed, and the performance on quality units either way are comparable… So that expanded my options.
I had to rule out my current audio interface manufacturersinde they still have only beta drivers for Windows 7 for even their newest units, so it seems I would be in the same boat again.. looking at my options I narrowed the search to Presonus and Focusrite. Both companies have great gear and a great history of audio excellence.
I first tried the Presonus Firestudio. I had all the options I needed for now, and nothing I didn’t. But they cautioned that my motherboard FireWire controller was approved but could experience trouble if pushed to more than 16 streams of I/o (which I couldnt imgine using). Well, after installing the drivers and hooking up to my DAW…. I tried to load some of the demo projects from Sonar X2. I was not able to get any sound from the DAW. After much tinkering, I still was unable to get sound. So I resorted to loading one of my old projects which had about 56 tracks. It was able to play. But had little pauses in the audio. So I began tweaking to adjust latency and buffers to no avail. It got better but never went away.
Presonus tech support was great and I commend them highly. They offered many suggestions to help first from Twitter then via phone and email. I even sent them a PC hardware profile which turned up an irq conflict. Resolving the conflict bore no fruit and my problem persisted. Thanks Presonus for all your help.
I then returned the Presonus unit hoping to get the Presonus Audiovox 1818VSL which is a USB2.0 interface but they were not available locally. That became my second choice since Presonus showed their worth with great tech support. Alas, I picked up a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Also a FireWire interfafe and way more I/o than I need, but my FireWire controller is on the Focusrite recommended list.
Once installing the latest drivers and MixControl software and adjusting the buffers and latency, my test projects worked perfect. And at a latency of HALF of what I ran on my old interface.
The Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 won the round and I hope it to serve me well for years to come. Once I clean up my studio, and my DAW, the old EMu 1820m will be coming out and I will add my last legacy UAD1 cad into my pc again.
Greetings folks. It’s just a rough week for me this week as far as getting videos uploaded and done. I am trying to work every chance I get but I’m spending most time in studio actually sorting out and getting Steven Slate Drums 4 setup and working in Sonar X2. It works fine straight up.. but I wanted to route EACH track/drum in SSD4 to a separate track/fader in Sonar x2. Its a laborious process but I think I have it down.
I’m now going to work on getting some of my track presets setup in Sonar X2 so I can simply “drag and drop” track presets over to my EDIT window and create the new tracks with all the sends, FX, names, Inputs and Outputs all setup in advance. Once I sit down to work on the recording bit.. I am going to fly.. I don’t want to have to click this.. go to a menu that.. etc.. just drag.. pick up my axe.. and record a take. No wasting time.. the ideas will come fast.. and will get recorded fast. That is my goal.
So again, sorry for the lack of a video this week… I should have plenty of action next week… but meanwhile.. I suggest you check me out on Twitter @ PeterJCruz. I tweet from my phone all the time so you can keep up with latest happenings from me whether I am updating my blog here.. or Youtube.. or whatever..
Rock on folks!
Here’s a quick video I shot this morning in my new video suite. I had some fun using the ChromKey backdrop… still trying to get some of the glitches out.. but I’m up and running. The worst is done.. and now it’s just tweaks, fine tuning.. and lots of SHREDDING to be done.. Enjoy!!!
I just thought I’d send up a few pics this evening of the progress so far… Mind you, these are pics taken with my cell phone.. so not stellar quality.. but it should give you a glimpse of my work area/studio.
That’s all for now.. rock on and talk soon!!
I was able to hang my acoustical treatments this weekend and finished up this morning. The video portion of the room just needs some tweaking for the lighting.. but it should be good to go in no time at all. I should have some time this week to do some touching up on the various loose ends I have in studio, but otherwise… all looks good to start the Pre-Production phases of “The Atlantis Suite.”
For my upcoming CD project, it’s STILL very early but here’s the vision. The album will be an “eclectic” instrumental metal mix (what I’m calling “instrumetal”). It will actually be a “musical” journey thru a fictional story. In the story, at the end of the Mayan Calendar… on the Winter Solstice of 2012 (that’s soon right?).. there are cataclysmic changes to the earth. As a result of this, the world geography drastically changes. Let’s just say, Las Vegas becomes waterfront property for one. =)Among the changes, the “lost Continent” of Atlantis rises from the sea once again. Of course, it is no longer inhabited, but it’s former glory is there for all to admire. In fact, due to the changes on the Earth.. many immigrate to the new land to settle and rebuild on the former Ancient Ruins. There will actually be a story for each song, and as such.. there will actually be a “verse” or piece that can be read to understand each song.. however it will not be read or sung DURING the song, instead it will be available for those interested in following the story. That’s the plan now anyways. I hope to also have some guest musicians on the album… but stay tuned for that. Let me work on getting some material together first. =) I also will do doing a “Social Media” campaign to promote the album (which will be available via the normal channels like Amazon, iTunes, CDBaby, LastFM, etc), so you very likely be seeing videos and posting related to such… so Stay Tuned!!
That’s all for now. Rock on!!
And a happy one at that. All the best to you and your loved ones.
I’m beginning the process of writing material for my 2012 opus, and I have high hopes for a seriously rocking disc. So stay tuned for progress on the writing.
Meanwhile some goings on . I picked up a Samson CT20 clip tuner and it’s pretty slick. Also, after doing the Tone King Holiday contest I just threw down a quick preset from Guitar Rig 5 to finish up the guitar audio to import back to the video…. And it sounded amazing. I’ve gotten compliments on it and it’s growing on me. Sooooo I’ve begun tweaking that preset and adding some more “mics” to it and using the Control Room Pro feature to it fullest in Guitar Rig. The idea is to get the wall of sound with fewer tracks and its promising. I plan to record a simple track with different guitar sounds to make a decision on what I want for the CD. I also found a killer filter bank/harmonized part in Guitar Rig 5 that I already have riffs and ideas for a song. This is going to be sick!!!
Lastly, let me say guitarist Neil Zaza is HORRIBLY UNDERRATED. I just ordered his upcoming CD “Clyde The Cat” and it’s great. He is such a melodic player with insane chops. His tone, articulation, melodic sense and shredability are off the charts. Since I preordered it before Christmas I got to download it and will receive it once it’s released with his last CD “212.”
That’s it for now…. Rock on!!
At long last, Deck The Halls is done. Well, SORT OF. Christmas is like 2 days away.. and while the song is done… I’ve only been able to create a very simple mix. I would like more time to tweak it so, but guess what? I’m really inexperienced when it comes to mixing… so there’s no point is spending time to make it a mess. I tried it for one mix already and it was AWFUL!! So I zero’d everything back and redid it as SIMPLE as I could. It came out pretty good. Nothing amazing.. but it should make for some fun listening.
I got to use Slate Digital’s VCC, some of my UAD1 plugins.. and the awesomeness of Sonar X1 Producer Enhanced. I’m REALLY liking the “Softtube Saturation Knob.” A little tweak of that brought my snare drum to life!! Wow!! I’ve learned SO MUCH with this recording stuff recently.. I’m sure the mixing won’t be too bad a learning curve, I just don’t want to spend time on it now It’s best to get the song out into the public. Anyways, I have a few things on my plate between now and the end of the year.. but soon thereafter I will begin WRITING for my new CD. I’m calling it “Atlantis 2012” right now… so stay tuned on that. I’ll post my progress on Twitter and this blog/Youtube as I go. I’m HOPING and AIMING for a June 1st release… Be sure to stay in touch here and on my twitter page (see the links in the sidebar) for updates.
Tomorrow I will shoot some videos and hope to have them uploaded to YouTube tomorrow night… Be on the look out for it!!
Hey folks!!!! Just a quick word on what I’m currently upto. And what I’m planning. One thing is for sure…. I’ll be posting blogs more regularly… So stay tuned. The “bad news” is I’m behind where I would like to be on my Christmas project.
